The United States now has 200 million fully vaccinated people, which “sounds really big” but it is not the full story, according to Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake.

“When you look at the fact as an overall United States population, the fact that we, Australia, were six to nine months behind the United States and then surpassed it,” he told Sky News Australia.

Mr Flake said the US was “in a really tough spot right now” as the vaccine is not being taken up uniformly.

“Adult Democrats are likely to be about 90 per cent vaccinated right now; adult Republicans are about 60 per cent vaccinated,” he said.

“And we’ve seen now for the first time in 2021, the deaths this year exceeded the deaths in 2020 despite the vaccinations.”
