Former Labor Minister Stephen Conroy says “senators have an independent role in the process” of Senate committee hearings.

A senate report on media diversity has called for a judicial inquiry with the powers of a royal commission into private media.

Mr Conroy said the Senators put up “positions that they’re passionate about” but do not constantly have the support of the frontbench and parliament.

“In terms of what the Greens have proposed, my first reaction to it is to cop out,” he told Sky News Australia.

“If the Greens believe there’s a problem with media diversity in this country, we don’t need another inquiry.

“They should put forward proposals to break up media companies, don’t hide behind independent so called judicial investigation.

“Just put the legislation up to parliament, otherwise it is just another waste of time and taxpayers money.”
