Liberal MP Dave Sharma says social media companies will be effectively “treated as publishers” under the Morrison government’s proposed legislation targeting online trolling.

The new laws which are being drafted could help people to unmask anonymous users who defame them.

“I think once we introduce these laws and change these laws, what it does is it changes the norms,” he told Sky News host Sharri Markson.

“And social media companies will now be treated as publishers which means they’ll know they’ll need to take responsibility for online content and hence you’ll expect their editorial team, their legal team, and all these other people will now be involved in scrubbing off content that falls foul of the law.”
