NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission has launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The mission is to test Earth’s defences against incoming asteroids which may hit the planet.

The rocket is aimed at twin asteroids Didymos and Dimorphos, which are nearby and do not pose any harm to Earth.

It is expected DART will hit Dimorphos at a speed of 6.6 kilometres a second in September of next year.
