Sky News Darwin Bureau Chief Matt Cunningham says Darwin has been “really hurt” by the lack of migrants over the past two years.
It comes as The Sydney Morning Herald reports 58 per cent of Australian voters want migration levels to be lower than before the pandemic, according to a new poll.
“I mean the mango farmers here have been absolutely desperate, they’re seeing their fruit rot on the ground because they can’t get those workers in,” Mr Cunningham said.
“We’ve had to do special deals to get them here from East Timor and the Pacific.
“I’d like to think that people where I live would like to see more migration.”
