Former speaker of the house Bronwyn Bishop says there are too many in the Labor Party who are “apologists for China” at a time when “we have to stand up strongly” for Australian values.

It comes after Shadow Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Defence Minister Peter Dutton was “wildly out of step” with long-held Australian foreign policy in terms of relations with Taiwan during an address to the ANU National Security College.

“China wants to be the dominant nation in the world,” Ms Bishop told Sky News host Paul Murray.

“So what we have to do is stand up for ourselves and Dutton did it today – Penny Wong didn’t.”
