New South Wales Treasurer Matt Kean says the state could have done with skilled migrants a month ago when it was originally planned by Premier Dominic Perrottet.

This comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced visa holders can return to Australia from December 1 – contrary to the New South Wales government’s plan of November 1.

“The job vacancies in New South Wales are about 50 per cent, which is huge,” Mr Kean told Sky News Australia.

“That means that it’s putting upwards pressure on inflation and driving up costs of living right across New South Wales.

“We need more migrants coming into New South Wales, particularly skilled migrants, if we are going to grow our economy, increase productivity and put downward pressure on our prices.”
