Shadow Foreign Minister Penny Wong has accused the Coalition of amplifying the threat of war with China for political gain.
Earlier this month Defence Minister Peter Dutton warned it would be ‘inconceivable’ for Australia not to support action by the US – if it moved to defend Taiwan.
She argues his comments are out of step with the long-held strategy of not publicly stating whether Australia or our allies would defend Taiwan – in the event of an attack by Beijing.
China has threatened to take Taiwan by force but maintains its aim is for a ‘peaceful reunification’.
Senator Wong blames the government for escalating the threat of regional conflict.
