Austria has entered its fourth nationwide lockdown in an effort to contain skyrocketing COVID-19 cases.

Residents are only allowed to leave their homes for essential reasons such as work, exercise and shopping for food.

All non-essential businesses – including restaurants and bars – have been ordered to close.

The lockdown is expected to end on December 12, but restrictions will be reassessed after 10 days.

Austria has one of the lowest vaccination rates in western Europe with just 66% of the population is fully vaccinated.
