The United States is considering a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing to protest China’s treatment of its Uyghur Muslim minority.
Under a diplomatic boycott, American athletes would still participate in the games in February – but an official delegation of US government officials would not attend.
Sky News Australia discussed the issue with Political analyst and Curtin University Professor Joe Siracusa who said “you don’t boycott the Olympics”.
“The Olympic movement is above this,” Prof Siracusa said.
Prof Siracusa said it’s one of the few times where athletes the world over can compete with each other in an event which is supposed to “transcend politics”.
“You certainly don’t boycott The Ashes, or the World Cup, or you don’t boycott the World Series … it’s a bad idea.”
