Cricket Australia is on the hunt for a new captain after Tim Paine sensationally quitting over a sexting scandal on Friday.

Vice captain Pat Cummins is firming up as the favourite to take the reins of the side.

It was a tearful Paine who fronted the media to make the announcement less than a month out from the Ashes.

“I have loved my role as captain of the Australian cricket team,” he said.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my sporting life to lead the Australian men’s Test team.

“I’m grateful for the support of my teammates and proud of what we have been able to achieve together.

“To them I ask for their understanding and forgiveness.”
