Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the AUKUS alliance with the United Kingdom and United States is about “much more than nuclear submarines” as it aims to strengthen technology and defence in the Indo-Pacific region.

“This is a partnership based fundamentally on trusts and shared interests; a partnership where, guided by our enduring ideals and shared commitment to an international rules-based order – the democratic freedoms, we’ve resolved to deepen our diplomatic security and defence cooperation,” he said.

Mr Morrison said AUKUS would see the trilateral partners “promote deeper information sharing” and “foster greater integration of security and defence-related science” as well as technology, industry and supply chains.

“As ASPI has written, the real potential of AUKUS lays in how the new grouping can be leveraged in the long term to help Australia deal with the profound technological disruption about to sweep the world,” he said.
