Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has dismissed calls to subsidise electric vehicles, declaring he does not want his taxes going to fund rich people’s “warm glove”.

The Morrison government is set to unveil an electric vehicle strategy on Tuesday in a bid to cut carbon emissions to meet the net zero target.

“I don’t want my taxes going to subsidise rich people’s warm glove by buying an electric car that’s powered by coal fire,” he told Sky News Australia.

“What’s the justification at all for the government to take taxes off poor people and give it primarily, let’s face it, to rich people who want to drive around in a Tesla?”
