The Victorian government has announced a $44 million support package for Melbourne CBD businesses with the hope a round of dining vouchers will attract Victorians back into the city.

Diners will be able to claim 30 per cent back on their bill when spending between $50 and $500 at cafes, restaurants and bars between Monday and Thursday.

The $5 million voucher scheme will begin on November 15 and run until funds are exhausted.

Restaurant and Catering Australia CEO Wes Lambert says the dining voucher scheme will bring “tens of millions of dollars” into the hospitality sector within the city of Melbourne.

“It will inject $5 million into the Melbourne CBD,” Mr Lambert told Sky News Australia.

“And what we saw both the last time Melbourne CBD did this, and in New South Wales with the Dine and Discover vouchers that patron tend to spend much more than the face value of the rebate.”
