Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has thrown his support behind Victorian MP Tim Smith as he tries to save his political career – after a drunken car crash.
Mr Smith fronted the media outside parliament labelling the incident as a ‘error of judgement’.
He repeatedly refused to answer questions on whether he was asked to resign by Liberal Leader Matthew Guy .
Mr Guy says he ‘made it clear’ Mr Smith should not nominate at the next election and for the seat of Kew.
Despite his refusal to stand down – a Liberal Party committee is expanding its search for candidates to replace him.
But Mr Abbott is warning pre-selectors not to end the public life of the Liberal party’s ‘best Victorian talents’.
