Only time will tell how Cleo Smith has been impacted by her abduction experience, says senior lecturer in forensic psychology at Sydney University, Dr Celine Van Golde.
“Even four-year-children are able to recall accurately, and, quite elaborately, details of past experiences,” Dr Van Golde told Sky News Australia.
“Trauma impacts people – and adults and children – in different ways, and only time will tell how this impacts Cleo.”
She said some people are “more resilient” than others and there may still be plenty of accurate details drawn during the investigation even if trauma is present.
“Even when children are traumatised, if appropriate interviewing techniques are used they’ll still be able to recall details about what happened to them.”
