Prime Minister Scott Morrison says missing WA girl Cleo Smith being discovered alive is a “moment for great joy” for her and her family.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare, and the fact that that nightmare has come to an end, and our worst fears were not realised, is just a huge relief,” he said.

“This particular case obviously has captured the hearts of Australians as we felt such terrible sorrow for the family.”

Mr Morrison thanked the Western Australian police for their work in locating the little girl and acknowledged the effort they put in “every day”.

“I know that you’ll certainly feel a great sense of satisfaction in the work you have done to bring her home,” he said.

“We know each, and every day they are out there doing the same thing and trying to keep our kids safe and keep our people safe.”
