Paroo Shire Council Mayor Suzette Beresford has discussed the impacts of carbon abatement projects on regional and rural Australia.

“The impacts we’ve seen have been a decrease in population much higher than you’d normally see,” Ms Beresford told Sky News host Alan Jones.

“Because apart from the owners leaving the properties, the employees that helped do the stock and look after the pastoral activity, some of those have also gone.

“And, of course, it has a social impact because there aren’t the people to volunteer for SES or there aren’t the people to go and get on community organisations like the sport or for the local show, things like that.

“It also has an economic impact, because there aren’t as many goods and services required from the local towns.”
