Liberal MP Dave Sharma says the truth is there was “no betrayal” over the backing out of the French submarine deal – rather Australia’s circumstances just changed.
It comes as French President Emmanuel Macron revealed in no uncertain terms that PM Scott Morrison lied to him over Australia’s decision to scrap a $90 billion submarine contract in favour of a defence and security pact with the United States and the United Kingdom.
“There’s no secret the acquisition of the attack class submarine was not going as smoothly as we liked,” Mr Sharma told Sky News Australia.
“We then had an opportunity to get a significantly different and more suitable capability for Australia’s unique strategic circumstances and we took it.
“This is the truth of it – there’s no betrayal there it’s just things change you know, people’s circumstances change.”
