On Thursday the White House revealed Press Secretary Jen Psaki would not be joining Mr Biden on his international trip to Europe for the G20 and COP26 summits citing a family emergency.
Ms Psaki, aged 42, revealed in a statement on Sunday the “family emergency” was members of her household testing positive for COVID-19 last week ahead of her own positive test.
She last saw Mr Biden on Tuesday while wearing a mask and social distancing before the President left for the G20 in Rome.
‘A lot of things’ Jen Psaki doesn’t want to hear about Biden
Fears Mr Biden, aged 78, may have been exposed to the virus have been put to rest by Ms Psaki who said she had tested negative several times since seeing him.
Multiple doctors have told CNN it is highly unlikely Ms Psaki could have infected the US President given the timeline.
The President last tested negative to COVID-19 on Saturday.
Ms Psaki said she was disclosing the positive test result “out of an abundance of transparency” and reported mild symptoms.

Her statement reads: “On Wednesday, in coordination with senior leadership at the White House and the medical team, I made the decision not to travel on the foreign trip with the President due to a family emergency, which was members of my household testing positive for COVID-19.”
“Since then, I have quarantined and tested negative (via PCR) for COVID on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. However, today, I tested positive for COVID.
“I will plan to return to work in person at the conclusion of the ten day quarantine following a negative rapid test, which is an additional White House requirement, beyond CDC guidance, taken out of an abundance of caution.”

When the Press Secretary dropped out of Mr Biden’s entourage on Thursday she was replaced by her deputy Karine Jean-Pierre.
The President received his COVID-19 booster shot in September and is currently participating in Monday’s United Nations Climate Summit in Glasgow.
Those travelling with Mr Biden have been taking daily tests for COVID-19 since leaving Washington and all are fully vaccinated.
Many officials which he will come into contact with on the international trip have also received booster shots due to travel requirements.
