Prime Minister Scott Morrison has touched down in Rome to meet world leaders ahead of the G20 and COP26 summits.

Doubts have already been cast over the summit’s ability to bring about change following China’s no show and India’s refusal to commit to a net zero emissions target.

Nevertheless, speaking ahead of a series of bilateral meetings, Mr Morrison said Australia has “started the way back” in healing its relationship with France following the fallout from the AUKUS deal.

Addressing the phone call shared between himself and French President Emmanuel Macron, the prime minister said: “So we’ve started the way back, I think that’s a positive thing”.

“Of course there will be candid conversations at the start as we deal with the issues presented, but Australia and France have so many shared interests.”
