On Thursday, it was announced the election of a new Speaker will be held on November 23, following Tony Smith’s resignation.
Mr Smith previously announced he was stepping down as Speaker at the next election but has brought forward that date to November 22.
He will continue to serve as a backbench MP until the next election.
“I believe that we have had the privilege to serve in this House at a time when this House has had its finest speaker in you,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told Mr Smith.
“I know that is a view that is shared widely in this place, you are deeply respected, you have been a close friend. I want to wish you all the best.”
Question Time is being held hours before Mr Morrison heads to Europe, where he is set to attend the G20 in Rome and the COP26 summit in Glasgow.
