Prime Minister Scott Morrison is “walking a tightrope” on net zero with much of his party remaining bitterly divided on the issue, according to The Australian’s senior writer and columnist Troy Bramston.

Mr Bramston said if the prime minister can’t reach a deal on the target, it will “shred his authority”.

“There are also Liberal MPs in progressive, wealthy, suburban and city-based electorates who have constituents who want the government to act more seriously on climate change as well,” Mr Bramston said.

“If the government doesn’t act more strongly by next week, we may see breakouts within the Liberal Party, within the more moderate wing of the Liberal Party.

“He’s got a very, very tight parliamentary situation – he can’t allow defection.”
