It is “a bit embarrassing” Australia is lagging behind the rest of the world on climate change action, says The Australian’s Troy Bramston.

The Morrison government is currently debating whether to commit to a net zero emissions target ahead of the COP26 Climate Change Conference in November.

There has been significant international pressure for Australia to commit to more ambitious targets in line with the rest of the world, with many developed nations focused on upgraded 2030 targets ahead of the conference rather than the long-term 2050 target.

“We’re going to become an international pariah,” Mr Bramston told Sky News Australia.

“Even conservative countries like Boris Johnson’s United Kingdom or Angela Merkel in Germany or other countries in Europe, they have much more bolder commitments than we have.

“It’s a bit embarrassing on the global stage that we are lagging so far behind the rest of the world – but we are going to get to this position.”
