Former Senate powerbroker Nick Xenophon says he wants the Australian government to support his Ugg boot campaign as he flags a return to federal politics.
It comes after Sydney bootmaker Eddie Oygur was sued by Deckers Outdoor Corporation in 2016 after selling 13 pairs of Ugg boots to customers in the United States.
Deckers said they owned the trademark to the name ‘Ugg’ around the world, except in Australia and New Zealand, and would sue anyone bringing products into the country which used the term.
Mr Xenophon said if the Australian government files a “friend of the court” brief, it will “add immeasurably” to the chances of the US Supreme Court hearing Mr Oygur’s appeal.
“It’s very much in the national interest to get behind this campaign,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
