Shadow Minister for Education and Women Tanya Plibersek has described embattled Labor MP Anthony Byrne as a “whistleblower” in the wake of his admission to branch-stacking.

On Monday Mr Byrne admitted to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission of his involvement in branch stacking within the Victorian Labor Party branch.

Ms Plibersek criticised those interfering with “sideline” commentary on the IBAC inquiry before saying Mr Byrne is the “whistleblower in all of this”.

The response prompted Sky News host Laura Jayes to ask: “But should that mean that he gets away with it”?

“No, that’s not what I’m saying at all – I’m saying we need to let the IBAC do its work independently and without any sort of political interference or commentating,” Ms Plibersek replied.

It comes as Federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese refused to stand down Mr Byrne over the matter.
