National Party members will meet later this week to discuss whether they will back the Liberal Party’s net zero emission policy which will be taken to cabinet by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Wednesday.

Today’s cabinet meeting will see ministers discussing the emissions roadmap going forward with Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie welcoming the debate.

However, she said any deal would have to be amenable to those in regional areas.

“I think it’s really important that we have this debate,” she said.

“It has been true that the Nationals have been firm during this long debate, it hasn’t made us popular in certain dinner party circles but we’ve actually been able to avoid very bad outcomes for our country and our communities.

“The National Party is meeting on Sunday so there cant be any deal, as we have shown for over 14 years, of this particular topic unless it’s right for the regions.”
