Any “serious conversation” about a net zero emissions target by 2050 has to include nuclear energy, according to Darwin Bureau Chief Matt Cunningham.

The Daily Telegraph is reporting the Australian Workers Union is calling for a nuclear industry to help protect the nation against China or other foreign threats following the AUKUS submarine deal.

“It’s interesting the Australian Workers Union is backing a nuclear industry in Australia but the bipartisan position of the Coalition and the Labor Party is still an anti-nuclear one,” he said.

“We need to have a discussion, there are plenty of people in the federal parliament now who are willing to have it and I think it’s time that that discussion be had.”
