China has lodged stern representations with Australia over former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s personal visit to Taiwan last week.

Beijing has expressed its discontent over Mr Abbott’s comments while on the trip – labelling them ‘irresponsible’ and ‘immoral’.

The former PM met the Taiwan President and publicly told a security forum that China may lash out due to its slowing economy and ‘creaking’ finances.

A spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated Mr Abbott’s actions ‘seriously violated’ the one-China Principle – sending ‘seriously wrong signals to the outside world’.
