Tens of thousands of Melbournians are expected to exit their 14-day home quarantine early under proposed changes to isolation protocols.

The arrangement means secondary close contacts will no longer be required to quarantine if they share the same home as the primary close contact.

Authorities are confident household contacts who test negative are an indication primary close contacts are most likely to be COVID negative as well.

There are, presently, more than 50,000 primary and secondary contacts across Victoria.

The changes are expected to be announced later on Saturday.
