Sky News host Nicholas Reece says former prime minister Tony Abbott’s visit to Taiwan “stirred up plenty of controversy”.
It comes as Mr Abbott has visited Taiwan and told an international forum, it is possible China could attack Taiwan quite soon and added it is in everyone’s interest to ensure it doesn’t happen
“With tensions rising across the Taiwan Strait, and with Australia’s relationship with China in a perilous state, this is a time when diplomatic skill is required,” Mr Reece said.
“Enter Tony Abbott. This week the former Prime Minister made a historic trip to Taiwan and as always, stirred up plenty of controversy.
“Indeed, Tony Abbott’s visit is causing ripples inside the Morrison government, with some ministers questioning whether the visit is necessary during a time of heightened tensions with China.”
Mr Reece said Australia does not recognise Taiwan “diplomatically”.
“The policy recognises that it is a complex area, and it requires nuance, something which Tony Abbott, carrying on like a bull in a China shop, seemed to miss the point on.”
