Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has offered his democratic support to Taiwan in the face of what he has labelled “China’s challenges”.
Mr Abbott’s visit to the island nation coincides with increasing Chinese encroachment on Taiwanese air space as fears of future conflict between the nations continue to escalate.
The former prime minister also discussed trade with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu
In a keynote address, Mr Abbott called for an end to “international isolation”.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Mr Abbott is visiting Taiwan in a private capacity.
“Tony (Abbott) is in Taiwan as a private citizen, and I didn’t have any conversation with him before that … so what he said and what messages he passed on, he passed on in that capacity,” Mr Morrison said.
