Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has revealed she initially sought the health advice of the ABC’s Dr Norman Swan prior to cancelling the city’s 9pm New Year’s Eve fireworks.

The family fireworks were originally cancelled before subsequently reversing the decision after discussions with the New South Wales government.

The Lord Mayor was questioned by councillors during an extraordinary meeting yesterday as to why she hadn’t spoken to the state’s chief health officer, Dr Kerry Chant.

In response, Ms Moore stated: “I had the Doherty Institute’s advice, and I also was very, very impressed with Professor Raina MacIntyre and with Norman Swan, and I just wanted to become fully informed about what could happen.”
