Dominic Perrottet’s decision to release daily COVID-19 case numbers first thing in the morning shows the newly elected NSW Premier does not want to be the “COVID numbers premier”, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.
The major change, announced by the premier on Wednesday, will see daily case numbers released to the public at 9 am.
“Gladys Berejiklian, part of the aura she created around herself were those 11 o’clock pressers – here are the secret numbers, and that’s the end of that,” he said.
“I guess part of the strategy around that was where Gladys Berejiklian was heading, which was normalising COVID, saying these are numbers we’re still going to release, but we’re not going to make a big song and dance about it every day.
“For that to be one of his first acts, it’s partly about openness, isn’t it?
“It’s a departure from the way Gladys Berejiklian did things; it’s a sign he doesn’t want to be the COVID numbers premier, which Gladys Berejiklian became and became very popular off the back of.”
