University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor International Professor Michael Wesley says US President Joe Biden not knowing France would react negatively to the cancelled submarine deal is an act of “extraordinary naivete”.
Professor Wesley said President Biden should have expected a “major NATO ally” like the French would be upset over losing the contract, especially to the United States itself.
Professor Wesley said the anger from the French government “continues to be white hot” as Trade Minister Dan Tehan has been unable to secure meetings in France.
“He’s got a really, really difficult time ahead of him in Paris, the anger of the French government is continuing to be white hot,” he told Sky News Australia.
“They might have started to patch things up with the United States but they’re in no mood to do the same with the British or with Australia.
“I wouldn’t expect to see Dan Tehan get too many high-level meetings while in Paris.”
