Education in Australia should not be “indoctrination from either end of the spectrum”, according to CEO of Catholic Schools NSW Dallas McInerney.

“If we keep advancing material and putting into the classroom, which has this negative view of the world … why would a kid pick up a book and learn more about that,” Mr McInerney told Sky News host Alan Jones.

Mr McInerney discussed an essay he recently wrote for anthology Australia Tomorrow about the falling learning outcomes for Australian children.

“What I’ve tried to say in the essay – is put a question mark over an approach to teaching and learning which privileges the attainment of skills at the expense of knowledge,”
