Victoria has recorded the largest spike in daily COVID-19 cases of any Australian jurisdiction after reporting 1,763 new locally acquired infections in the past 24 hours.

The latest tally marks a grim milestone for the already embattled state, which has surpassed Argentina capital Buenos Aires for the world record of days spent in lockdown on Monday.

This comes as the construction industry is set to be reopened after the Victorian government enforced a two-week shutdown as a result of a number of positive cases on jobs sites around the state.
