Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says Former Transport Minister Andrew Constance has “enough popularity” to win the seat of Gilmore at the federal election.
Mr Constance on Sunday stepped down from state parliament to run for a seat in Gilmore at the next federal election in 2022.
There are reports of local Liberals who are not happy about bids to install Mr Constance in the marginal seat.
“The first thing is because he pulled out of the Eden-Monaro by-election, there’s always a bit of doubt in mind isn’t there if he’ll see it through,” Mr Clennell told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“The second thing, he’s put Dominic Perrottet’s government at risk by creating a by-election when he has a 6.9 per cent margin.
“But thirdly, and this is why Scott Morrison supports him, he has a red-hot chance of winning that seat, even if there’s swings elsewhere in New South Wales.
“I’d actually tip that he would win it, not withstanding, as you point out, he’ll upset some local Liberal’s along the way.”
