Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he has tried to reach out to Emmanuel Macron but the French President did not answer his call.

It comes as Paris withdrew its ambassadors from Australia and the US amid outrage after a contract for diesel submarines between the France and Australia was torn up by the Morrison government.

When asked in a media conference if he had called President Macron the Prime Minister responded in the affirmative.

“Yes we have and the opportunity for that call is not yet – but we’ll be patient,” he said.

“We understand their disappointment and that is the way that you manage difficult issues.

“It’s a difficult decision. It was a very difficult decision.”

President Macron and President Biden have since made up – with the French ambassador due to return to the United States.

“I welcome the fact that they’ve had that discussion and that was discussed between President Biden and I yesterday,” Mr Morrison said.

“So I’m glad that that call took place.”
