Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said any calls to the French are going unanswered even though US President Joe Biden will speak to French President Emmanuel Macron today.

President Biden apologised for the lack of warning the French were given before the cancellation of the $90 billion submarine deal, and France has reinstated the US ambassador.

The Australian ambassador has not been reappointed, but Mr Morrison said approaches were being made although not returned.

Mr Morrison said America’s way of handling the AUKUS alliance situation with France is different to Australia’s, as the US needs to maintain the NATO partnership.

“The United States and France are NATO partners and there are certain expectations among NATO Partners about how they engage with each other on national security issues,” Mr Morrison said.
