Resources Minister Keith Pitt says China is still the biggest domestic producer and user of coal in the world despite its plan to cut back on overseas projects.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to stop financing overseas coal projects, but according to Yale University researchers, Beijing has some 247 gigawatts of coal-fired power in planning or development domestically.

“When we look at what the announcement is from China, I am waiting on the details, but they are talking about export finance,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“Internally, they are still the biggest domestic producers and users of coal in the world.”
