China does not deserve praise on climate change action until it makes changes to its “onshore emissions,” according to Sky News host Chris Smith.
It comes as the UN has welcomed President Xi Jinping’s recent announcement that China will not build any new coal-fired power stations abroad.
“That last word is the most important – abroad,” Mr Smith said.
“He didn’t say China will not build any new coal-fired power stations full stop, which, if the world wants to reduce temperature … must occur.
“Let’s not allow this announcement to distract us from China’s onshore emissions; China currently operates at least 1,058 coal-fired power stations.
“China has been the world’s largest carbon emitter for 20 long years.”
