President Joe Biden says the United States will double its Pfizer donation to developing nations and share around one billion doses with the rest of the world.

The stepped-up commitment is to help achieve the goal of vaccinating 70 per cent of the global population within the next year.

He made the pledge at a virtual COVID-19 summit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly – calling well-off nations to take more action to get the pandemic under control.

The World Health Organisation says only 15 per cent of the promised vaccine donations from wealthy countries have been delivered.

The US has supplied 160 million shots to more than 100 countries – representing more donations than the world combined.
