Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the stand-off between police and protesters at the Shrine of Remembrance is “turning into a siege”.
Tuesday marks the third consecutive day of protests in Melbourne, which Premier Daniel Andrews has condemned as “appalling” and “unlawful”.
“It’s a siege-like situation, it reminds me of a couple of situations as a young police reporter that I covered,” Mr Clennell said.
“Where the protesters aren’t moving, they’re basically being told to move on but they’re refusing to do so.
Mr Clennell referenced the Cronulla riots and other situations where police have had to come in and “basically use violence”.
“In these situations, it can become a war of attrition, it can become an all-nighter,” he said.
“Or at some point, the police can decide to move in.”
