The Spectator Australia columnist Caroline Di Russo says former prime minister Paul Keating “never fails to have an opinion” as he slams Labor for supporting the AUKUS submarine deal.

The Age is reporting Mr Keating has unleashed fury on the Labor Party for supporting the AUKUS alliance which he claims is a “surrender” of the nation’s control over its military.

“Keating is historically quite pro-China so I can understand the comments from that point of view,” she said.

“I think he’s probably being a little tough on Labor because I don’t think this a fight that Labor can pick and win.

“It’s not something people want to be contentious about.”
