Voluntary assisted dying laws will be passed in Queensland in a historic vote to take place this afternoon.

Parliament has supported the second reading 61 to 30, with more than 100 amendment clauses to be debated.

Sky News Queensland Editor Peter Gleeson said there will be “plenty of tears” and “plenty of emotions” at parliament during the debate for assisted dying bill law.

“This bill has been a long time coming, it’s been through many parliamentary committees, it’s been through the law reform commission, they appointed two eminent academics to look at it to ensure that it got the right mix.

“Despite that, we’ve seen the opposition leader David Crisafulli and his deputy David Janetzki oppose the bill on the basis that it goes too far.”
