SA Independent Senator and former Navy submariner Rex Patrick says that in general, nuclear powered submarines “are fantastic from an energy perspective”.

“They have an infinite energy source,” Mr Patrick told Sky News Australia.

Mr Patrick discussed some of the benefits, and possible negatives present in nuclear powered submarines.

“They’re larger, so they generally carry more weapons and more sensors.

“But they don’t perform quite as well as conventional submarines in coastal waters, or indeed there are circumstances which it is much, much quieter to be on a conventional submarine than it is to be on a nuclear-powered submarine.

“So, like everything, they have pros and cons.

“But nuclear submarines are indeed very capable defence equipment.”

It comes after Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has entered a historic deal to acquire nuclear-powered submarines in a trilateral partnership with the United Kingdom and United States.
