Former defence minister Joel Fitzgibbon says the trilateral agreement with Australia, United Kingdom, and the United States is a “welcome announcement”.
The trilateral security partnership will see Australia acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.
“It’s an announcement which will significantly enhance our capability, our force projection, and, of course, our capacity to signal deterrence,” Mr Fitzgibbon told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“Back then, of course, our underwater capabilities was mainly about intelligence or in other words, sneaking up into certain parts of the world and listening.
“We’ve now really moved to an underwater capability, which is about strike and deterrence, that’s not an insignificant change.”
