Senator John Barrasso has told Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Joe Biden calling the evacuation of US troops out of Afghanistan as an “extraordinary success” is the “lie of the 21st century” – and if he believes it, it is “delusional.”
Antony Blinken gave his testimony at day two of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee hearing into the examination of the evacuation out of Afghanistan.
The Secretary of State was questioned extensively over the Biden administration’s highly criticised decision to withdraw troops by August 31.
“President Biden has described the evacuation from Afghanistan as an extraordinary success – his words – extraordinary success,” Senator Barrasso said to Mr Blinken.
“This has to be the lie of the 21st century.
“It’s dishonest, and if he believes it’s delusional.
“America can no longer ever say we leave no American behind because Joe Biden did and by your own testimony in your words this morning there are still about 100 Americans trapped behind enemy lines.”
The Biden administration’s operation to end the 20 year war in Afghanistan was described as “fatally flawed” by the committee’s chairman Robert Menendez.
The takeover of the Taliban saw thousands of Afghani’s flocking to Kabul’s airport in an attempt to flee the country – with some even hanging off US military planes as they took off.
A twin terror attack – claimed by ISIS-K – saw 175 Afghan citizens and 13 US soldiers killed.
The quick evacuation out of Afghanistan also meant there are an estimated 100 American soldiers still left behind.
“This withdrawal and you’ve heard it from other senators from both sides of the aisle has been an epic failure,” Senator Barrasso said.
“No planning, no strategy.
“It was cobbled together at the last minute, disorganised, and it didn’t have to be this way .”
