The Taliban have got an insurgency on their hands as ISIS-K continues its pressure to attempt to undermine them and potentially take over them, according to CNN Senior International Correspondent Sam Kiley.

“Most of al-Qaeda was taken over by ISIS in Northern Syria and then they took over large amounts of lands – so this will be seen as an opportunity by them,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Then they’ve got the warlord issue right across the country – they have folded themselves into the Taliban but they’ll be wanting to see rewards for so doing or they’ll be fractious too.

“So this is by no means the end to conflict inside Taliban.”

Mr Riley said the situation overall would be very fragile and could tip rapidly into civil war.

“It is fragile, extremely fragile.”
